Canberra Opera is a community-based opera company providing specialised training and opera performance experience for singers, musicians and production staff. Canberra Opera's principle aims are:
- To assist singers who wish to pursue a career in opera with the training and performance experience necessary for further professional engagements with opera companies
- To provide a strong opera chorus and build a community of people interested in opera
- To bring opera to a wider audience by providing the Canberra region with entertaining and affordable opera productions
Since its foundation in 2011 as Canberra Opera Workshop (COW) under Artistic Director David Reedy, Canberra Opera has mounted two full-scale opera productions. In November 2011, Donizetti's The Elixir of Love was performed in the ANU Arts Centre. In July 2012, COW performed Mozart's The Magic Flute over two weekends in Lyneham High School's Performing Arts Centre. Canberra Opera also held a series of Christmas concerts, featuring favourite opera arias and choruses alongside Christmas-themed music.
In 2015 Canberra Opera performed Puccini's La Bohème in partnership with the Ainslie Arts Centre.
Canberra Opera's Artistic Director is David Reedy.

We Provide Career Opportunities
Many opera companies employ by contract and require performers to have had prior principal role experience. This experience is also a prerequisite to compete in opera scholarships (such as the Dame Elizabeth Murdoch Scholarship), and to gain entry to USA and other overseas music institutions.
We Provide Development Opportunities
For each opera production, members follow the process from first reading, musical rehearsals, production stages, sitsprobe, technical and dress rehearsals to public performance. They also receive tuition in stagecraft, movement, deportment and makeup by qualified practitioners.
In addition, Canberra Opera provides training and performance experience for conductors, musicians, costume and set design, construction, stage management, graphic design & publicity, stage crew and front of house staff.
